Dodgers Manager Blasts Sasaki After Dismal Outing..ANHTRUC.

Dodgers have a Roki Sasaki-sized problem | Yardbarker

Dodgers pitcher Roki Sasaki faced a challenging outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks this past Friday, leaving manager Dave Roberts with some concerns. The young Japanese pitcher encountered difficulty, lasting just four innings and surrendering five earned runs on five hits, coupled with two walks. Notably, Sasaki didn’t register a single strikeout, a rare occurrence for a pitcher of his caliber.

Roberts didn’t mince words following the game, observing that Sasaki seemed to be struggling from the get-go. Facing 20 batters without a single strikeout was a testament to the formidable swings Arizona’s hitters were taking. “He didn’t have anything tonight to put guys away,” Roberts noted, highlighting that Sasaki’s command of his fastball and splitter was not at its sharpest.

It’s important to remember that Sasaki is adapting to a pitching schedule quite different from what he was used to in Japan, where starters typically pitch once a week. With Dodgers teammates Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell sidelined by injuries, Sasaki and fellow Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto have had to adjust to the more frequent five-day rotation of the MLB.

This outing came after a promising previous start where Sasaki notched his first major league win. The effort included five innings of work against the Atlanta Braves, allowing three runs, two walks, and collecting four strikeouts. At just 23, Sasaki is navigating the deep waters of MLB hitting, learning on the fly with mixed outcomes.

One area causing concern is Sasaki’s fastball velocity. Once clocked near 100 mph in Japan and during his MLB debut, his fastball has now dipped to around 94 mph. Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior explained that Sasaki is attempting to focus on control rather than sheer power, hoping to gain better command.

This reduced velocity makes Sasaki’s fastball more approachable for hitters, emphasizing the need for him to refine his pitch mix. His splitter stands as his standout secondary pitch, and if both the fastball and splitter aren’t clicking, tougher nights like the one against the Diamondbacks could become more frequent.

As the Dodgers grapple with injuries in their pitching staff, Sasaki has no choice but to adapt and evolve swiftly. It’s a steep learning curve, but with the guidance of coaches and his inherent talent, Sasaki has the opportunity to adjust and thrive in the MLB’s demanding environment.
