After an impressive 11-year career in the NFL, future Hall of Fame guard Zack Martin has decided to hang up his cleats, a decision that spells trouble for the Miami Dolphins. It’s astonishing to recall that Martin was picked just three spots before the Dolphins chose Ja’Wuan James.

James has been absent from the Dolphins for a while now, and unexpectedly, Billy Turner, who last played in 2023, had the longest tenure in that draft class in the NFL. While Martin’s 11-season stint has concluded, Miami continues to grapple with their interior line issues. Martin’s departure creates a void in the Cowboys’ offensive line, sparking rumors of them eyeing a player long linked with the Dolphins: former Jets player and Super Bowl victor, Mekhi Becton.

Martin’s retirement might dampen the Dolphins’ offseason plans. Addressing their guard position through free agency, and possibly the draft, is imperative. Becton, after departing the Jets and flourishing with the Eagles last season, emerged as a standout offensive lineman in 2024.

Unsurprisingly, Dallas, having faced him twice last season, would be keen on acquiring him. The competition for Becton will undoubtedly drive up his salary, and the Cowboys are better positioned financially to outbid Miami, should the Dolphins pursue him.

Alternatively, the Cowboys might bypass signing a potential top free agent guard and focus on the draft. Miami could be compelled to follow suit, yet the Cowboys could thwart their efforts. With Miami currently picking 13th and Dallas just ahead at 12th, if the Cowboys aim to draft a premier lineman, it’s likely the Dolphins would also be interested in that player. Conversely, if both franchises manage to fill their gaps at the position during free agency, Dallas’s strategy could shift, possibly targeting a player Miami had their eyes on.
