Zach Wilson Signs One-Year, $6 Million Deal with Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins have made a surprising move in free agency by signing quarterback Zach Wilson to a one-year contract worth $6 million. The former New York Jets signal-caller will now have an opportunity to revive his career in Miami.

A Fresh Start for Wilson

Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, struggled to find consistency with the Jets, leading to his eventual departure. Over three seasons in New York, he recorded 6,293 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions, failing to live up to the high expectations set for him.

The Dolphins, led by head coach Mike McDaniel, are looking to bolster their quarterback depth behind starter Tua Tagovailoa. Wilson is expected to compete for the backup role and provide insurance in case of injury.

Dolphins’ Strategy Moving Forward

With Wilson now on board, Miami secures a talented yet unproven quarterback who still has potential. The Dolphins are coming off a strong season and are positioning themselves for another playoff push.

This move raises questions about the team’s long-term plans at the quarterback position. Tagovailoa remains the clear-cut starter, but Wilson’s signing suggests that Miami wants to have a capable alternative if needed.

Can Wilson Turn His Career Around?

Wilson’s tenure with the Jets was marred by inconsistent performances, injuries, and coaching changes. However, a change of scenery and a fresh system under McDaniel may give him the reset he needs.

The 24-year-old quarterback has the physical tools to succeed, but his decision-making and accuracy have been concerns. If he can develop in a structured system with Miami, this one-year deal could serve as a stepping stone to reviving his NFL career.

With training camp on the horizon, all eyes will be on Wilson to see if he can make an impact in Miami and prove he still belongs in the league.

Dolphins Sign WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine

In addition to Wilson, the Dolphins have also reached an agreement with wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine on a two-year, $6.5 million deal, with $3.2 million guaranteed, per reports from Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo.

Westbrook-Ikhine, who previously played for the Tennessee Titans, brings versatility and depth to Miami’s receiving corps. Over his four-year career, he has recorded 94 receptions for 1,276 yards and 10 touchdowns. His size and blocking ability make him a valuable asset in both the passing and running game.

With this signing, the Dolphins continue to strengthen their offense, giving Tagovailoa and the coaching staff more weapons heading into the 2025 season.
