Eagles Sign 6-Time Pro Bowl Player Worth $80.1 Million to Replace Jahan Dotson-HN

The Philadelphia Eagles have tightened up their wide receiver rotation in recent weeks, choosing to stash Britain Covey on injured reserve and leave fifth-round rookie Ainias Smith on the bench. Kellen Moore is rolling out A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson and Johnny Wilson on game days, but only Brown and Smith are getting the ball. Dotson and Wilson have seen a combined 32 targets on the season.

With tight end Dallas Goedert battling through yet another injury-plagued season, Philly’s need for a more reliable third option in the passing game figures to chase the team into the offseason.

Eagles predicted to sign former $80.1 million, 6-time Pro Bowler to replace Jahan Dotson image

Matt Holder of Bleacher Report predicts GM Howie Roseman will solve that problem by signing six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Keenan Allen away from the Chicago Bears in free agency. Here was Holder’s take on the potential move:

Philadelphia has been searching for a third wide receiver to pair with A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith for a couple of years now and hasn’t had any luck finding a good one. So, the front office could explore the free-agent market for a veteran receiver who is looking to make one final push to get a Lombardi Trophy rather than cashing in and stockpiling targets. Allen could fit that description, having only made the playoffs three times and never winning a playoff game during his 12 seasons. While the 32-year-old is having a down year in a bad Bears offense, he still has six touchdowns on the campaign and is a year removed from a 1,200-yard performance.

Allen is currently in the final season of the four-year, $80.1 million contract he originally signed with the Los Angeles Chargers. He was expected to form an elite trio with D.J. Moore and Rome Odunze in Chicago this season, but the Bears have struggled to protect rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and are scuffliing through yet another losing season.

While Allen has had a down year by his standards, his 67 receptions and seven touchdowns prove he still has enough in the tank to be a reliable possession receiver. He has also spent more time in the slot (304 snaps) than out wide (258) for the Bears this season, making him a potential fit for Philly’s WR3 role, at least on paper.

Saquon Barkely isn’t going anywhere, and the Eagles deploy the most run-heavy offense in football. That works against a player like Allen landing in Philadelphia, as it’s hard to see  Roseman prioritizing wide receiver with key starters like RG Mekhi Becton, LB Zack Baun, EDGE Josh Sweat and DT Milton Williams all playing on expiring contracts. The Eagles just extended both DeVonta Smith and Brown. Would they really look to allocate more funds to that position in 2025?

The guess here is probably not. The Eagles are more likely to draft a playmaking tight end, or take another mid-round stab at wide receiver, than they are to bring in a high-priced free agent like Allen in free agency, as fun as that addition may be.
