Veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is back in the NFL after a brief retirement, signing with the Detroit Lions this Thursday. Just months ago, Bridgewater was leading his alma mater, Miami Northwestern Senior High School, to a state championship in his first season as head coach.
From Coach to Active QB
After stepping away from the NFL at the end of the 2023 season, the 32-year-old took on the role of head coach at his former high school. Under his guidance, the team crushed it with a 12-2 record, capping off their season with a dominant 41-0 win over the Raines Vikings to claim the 3A Division Championship in Florida high school football.
Bridgewater brings a decade of NFL experience, having suited up for teams like the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, and, of course, the Lions. In 79 games (65 starts), he’s put up 15,120 passing yards, 75 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions—a solid résumé for a returning pro.
Proven NFL Veteran: A Key Piece for the Lions
Lions head coach Dan Campbell praised the signing, saying:
“Teddy brings professionalism and a wealth of knowledge at a crucial time. He’s going to be an invaluable backup for Jared Goff as we push through this critical stretch of the season.”
With a stellar 13-2 record, the Lions are sitting pretty atop the NFC North and the entire conference. But the road ahead isn’t easy—they’re up against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17 before closing out the regular season with a matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Bridgewater’s addition could be just what they need to solidify their playoff run.
