After not being selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, UNLV Rebels safety Johnathan Baldwin has joined the Green Bay Packers. His unexpected rise and impressive performance as a rookie have captured attention in Green Bay. His leadership, adaptability, and impact on the field have been notable. The coaching staff is planning to shift him from safety to cornerback in their defensive strategy.
UNLV Rebels’ cornerbacks coach Akeem Davis told Packers on SI that he anticipates no difficulties for Baldwin in this transition and expects him to excel in Green Bay’s defense.
Akeem Davis on Johnathan Baldwin’s Adaptability: “He’s a ‘whatever the scheme demands’ type of athlete. In this defensive setup, he’ll provide the physical presence needed. He can cover from sideline to sideline, yet he’s also adept at moving aggressively forward. If you’re a Cover-3 team requiring a physical enforcer, a Kam Chancellor-like presence – not to say he is Kam Chancellor, but in that mold – he can fulfill that role. However, he’s also capable of playing deep due to his instincts and ability to perform in open space, coupled with his ball-tracking skills.”
Akeem Davis on Johnathan Baldwin’s Professionalism: “He demonstrated professionalism upon arrival. He’s one of the earliest to arrive, and among the last to leave. He watched as much film as we coaches did, engaging deeply in game planning, and this will serve him well in his transition since that’s the essence of a professional’s life.
He’s already established those habits… Now, he must consistently seize opportunities as they arise because the footage he produces will be his portfolio. He needs to capitalize on each opportunity – every single one – and he will. Given his character, Johnathan will indeed do that.”
Akeem Davis on Johnathan Baldwin’s Potential with the Green Bay Packers: “He’ll have staying power as he’s a unifying presence in the locker room. He’s intelligent, possesses a high football IQ, and can play intellectually, plus he’ll be a key player on special teams… He’ll be relentless, embodying the Green Bay culture.
He’s a diligent, industrious individual who will carve out his niche. It’ll be challenging for them to part with him due to the immense value he’s bound to contribute.”
