Tyron Smith brought a transformative culture to the Dallas Cowboys. Drafted from USC as the ninth overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, he was the first offensive lineman selected in the first round by Jerry Jones since he acquired the team in 1989. Smith’s remarkable career set a precedent for the Cowboys, who became known for selecting linemen in the first round with great success.
Following Smith’s lead, the Cowboys picked Travis Frederick in 2013, Zack Martin in 2014, Tyler Smith in 2022, and Tyler Guyton in 2024. Their strategy of focusing on linemen was instrumental in achieving powerful ground performances with DeMarco Murray, Ezekiel Elliott, and Tony Pollard as running backs.
It also paved the way for Dak Prescott to earn the 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Thus, it was fitting to see Prescott not just attending Smith’s retirement press conference but also supporting him with his choice of attire.
Prescott was spotted in the audience wearing a hat emblazoned with “Linemen” in Cowboys’ colors. While Prescott conveyed his admiration through his apparel, Smith expressed his sentiments verbally, referring to Prescott as “More than a teammate.
He’s a lifelong friend.” After 13 seasons with the Cowboys and one with the New York Jets, Smith retires, leaving an indelible legacy. He is destined for the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor and, ultimately, the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
