Houston Texans: Juice Scruggs returns vs. Tennessee-HN

As the Houston Texans close out their regular season this weekend, their biggest goal is to be healthy with the playoffs on the horizon. Some Texans will show renewed health in the finale, while others will recover theirs on the sideline.

Houston gets guard Juice Scruggs (foot) back for Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans, as he carries no designation on the team’s injury report. Meanwhile defensive lineman Denico Autry (knee) and Folorunso Fatukasi (ankle) will be out, as will guard Shaq Mason (knee) and cornerback Jeff Okudah (concussion).

Scruggs hasn’t played since before Houston’s open date in early December, missing the team’s last three games with a foot injury. The injury likely occurred during the Texans’ 23-20 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Dec. 1, although Scruggs was on the field until the game’s final snap. His absence came after he had his best game in Jacksonville (allowing one pressure, no penalties) since moving to left guard from center at the start of November.

The injury caused the Texans to employ their second major offensive line shift of the season. They moved right tackle Tytus Howard to left guard, where’s he’s played the three games Scruggs has been absent. Scruggs coming back could give Howard an opportunity to slot back in at his preferred position, though that will have to wait at least another week with Mason out.

Mason has not practiced or played since suffering a knee injury in the Dec. 21 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. With Scruggs back but no Mason, the team put its returning guard on the right side and kept Howard on the left during practice. They figure to play there against Tennessee with center Jarrett Patterson in between them and rookie Blake Fisher and Laremy Tunsil flanking them at right and left tackle.

Houston was already down Fatukasi on its defensive line. The seven-year veteran had missed four of the Texans’ previous five games with different injuries, and his appearance against the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 15 lasted just six snaps before he hurt his ankle and exited the game. Fatukasi had started in each of the Texans’ first 10 games before his stretch of ailments.

The line’s loss of Autry is new. The defensive end had been dealing with a knee injury in previous weeks but had played in every game for Houston since being reinstated from suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. But Autry played a season-low 16 snaps against the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas Day and only four of them came in the second half. The knee injury kept the 11-year veteran out of practice all week and will now keep him out of the matchup against the Titans, his former team of the previous three seasons.

Houston lost Okudah this week due to some friendly fire. The corner had a collision during a special teams period of Wednesday’s practice which sidelined him for the rest of the day. Concussion protocol caused him to miss the final two practices of the week and will keep him out of the Titans game.

Okudah’s absence strains the Texans corner depth, as the team now has only four healthy corners on the active roster. With the Titans matchup having no bearing on playoff seeding, it’s expected for Houston to rest their starters at some point during the game. But with Okudah down, the Texans may have to play Derek Stingley and Kamari Lassiter longer than they like.

A quad injury kept Lassiter out of Wednesday’s practice, but he participated the last two days and has no designation on the injury report. Though the quad may be something the Texans monitor and try to prevent reinjury of by resting Lassiter more during the game. Okudah’s inability to go limits that, but Houston could call up practice squad corner D’Angelo Ross for the game to spell the rookie at some point. Ross started two games in place of Lassiter this season while he was dealing with a shoulder injury and was elevated for the game against the Ravens as well.

Linebacker Christian Harris is also questionable for Sunday with an ongoing ankle injury. The third-year pro was a limited participant in practice all week. Fellow linebacker Jamal Hill is also questionable with a hamstring injury.
