Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson seems closer than ever to landing an NFL head coaching job, particularly after Detroit’s sustained success over the past two seasons. Johnson’s name has been a hot commodity on the head coaching carousel, especially after his decision last year to withdraw from consideration for the Washington Commanders’ position — a move that surprised many.
That decision, however, appears to have benefited both the Commanders and the Lions. Johnson has remained a key part of Detroit’s transformation into an NFC powerhouse, helping to establish a dynamic offense that ranks among the league’s best. Still, with multiple potential head coach openings on the horizon — including the Chicago Bears, New York Jets, and New Orleans Saints — Johnson’s services will be in high demand.
On Thursday, Johnson spoke candidly about his ambition to become an NFL head coach. His comments suggested that he is prepared to take on a leadership role and that the Lions may need to brace for his departure.
“I’d say I’m much more prepared than I was the last two years,” Johnson said (h/t Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network). “Now that I’ve been through the wringer a couple times, had some interviews, I certainly do feel more prepared, just from a big-picture standpoint… I think there’s a burning desire in every man to find out what he’s made of and push the limits and see if he’s got what it takes. Yeah, there’s a fire there.”
Given his experience in previous coaching searches, Johnson’s confidence in his readiness is warranted. He was a finalist for the Commanders’ head coach position in 2023 and was considered the favorite for the Carolina Panthers’ vacancy in 2022. However, Johnson chose not to pursue the Panthers’ role, reportedly declining an in-person interview with the team.
At just 38 years old, Johnson is widely regarded as one of the NFL’s brightest and most innovative offensive minds. His work in revitalizing quarterback Jared Goff’s career and orchestrating a potent Lions offense has not gone unnoticed. Detroit’s offensive success, powered by a balanced attack and creative play-calling, has made Johnson a standout candidate for teams looking for a fresh approach.
Despite his potential to move on, there remains a possibility that Johnson will stay in Detroit for another year. The Lions are on the cusp of becoming perennial contenders, and continuity could further cement their rise. Lions fans would undoubtedly welcome his return, but the allure of a head coaching opportunity may prove too enticing for Johnson to pass up this offseason.
The Road Ahead for Detroit
If Johnson does decide to leave, the Lions will need to prepare for a significant shift in their coaching staff. Head coach Dan Campbell has cultivated a culture of resilience and excellence, but finding a replacement for someone as integral as Johnson won’t be easy.
Still, the Lions’ future remains bright. Whether Johnson departs for a new challenge or remains to guide Detroit’s offense for one more season, the foundation he has helped build will serve the team well for years to come.
In the ever-evolving world of NFL coaching, the Lions are facing potential change, but one thing is clear: Ben Johnson’s impact has already left a lasting mark on Detroit’s resurgence.
