The Detroit Lions’ Search for a New Tight Ends Coach: Who Will Step Up?

The Detroit Lions have faced a major shake-up on the offensive side of the ball in recent weeks. One of the most significant losses? Tight ends coach Steve Heiden, who has joined Aaron Glenn and the New York Jets as their new offensive line coach.

With Heiden gone, the Lions are actively searching for the right candidate to step into this crucial role. One of their initial targets was Jacksonville Jaguars tight ends coach Richard Angulo, but the Jaguars have made moves to ensure he stays put. That means the Lions’ hunt continues.

So, who could fill the void? Here are three potential candidates, all of whom have ties to the Lions in some way.

Abdul Hodge – The Iowa Pipeline Connection

If the Lions want a proven developer of tight end talent, they should look no further than Iowa tight ends coach Abdul Hodge. Iowa is known as a tight end powerhouse, and Hodge has played a major role in that reputation.

He was the position coach for Sam LaPorta, the Lions’ second-round pick in 2023, helping mold him into an NFL-ready player. Additionally, he has prepared Luke Lachey for the upcoming draft, further showcasing his ability to develop elite-level tight ends. If Detroit wants a coach with a deep understanding of maximizing tight end talent, Hodge could be the perfect fit.

Dan Roushar – A Familiar Face from New Orleans

Another name to watch is Tulane offensive line coach Dan Roushar. He and Lions head coach Dan Campbell have a long-standing connection, dating back to their time together in New Orleans. In fact, when Campbell left his tight ends coaching role with the Saints, Roushar was the one who took over.

Roushar’s experience goes beyond tight ends—he has also coached offensive lines, running backs, and even served as a run game coordinator. That versatility could be appealing to the Lions, especially as they continue to build a well-rounded offensive staff under new offensive coordinator John Morton, who also has a history with Roushar.

Austin King – A Broncos Assistant with Strong Connections

A third potential candidate is Austin King, the Broncos’ assistant offensive line coach. He has worked closely with John Morton, both in Denver and during their time with the Las Vegas Raiders.

King has experience coaching tight ends, as well as serving in a quality control role. His familiarity with Morton’s offensive philosophy could make him a seamless fit within the Lions’ coaching structure.

Who Will the Lions Choose?

Detroit has some solid options as they look to fill this key coaching position. Whether they go with a proven college developer like Abdul Hodge, a seasoned veteran like Dan Roushar, or a younger, well-connected coach like Austin King, one thing is certain—the Lions need someone who can continue developing their talented tight end group.

The search is still ongoing, but with these candidates in the mix, Detroit is well on its way to making a strong hire.
