The New York Jets requested to interview Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley for their open head coaching job, per Albert Breer of MMQB.
This will be Hafley’s first head coaching interview. Breer believes the interview will take place at some point near the end of this week.
The Jets fired Robert Saleh — who eventually came to Green Bay in a consulting role — after a 2-3 start and finished 5-12. The organization is now going through an exhaustive interview process to find the next head coach.
Hafley, 45, just finished his first season as Matt LaFleur’s defensive coordinator in Green Bay. While a somewhat surprising hire at the time, Hafley led an incredible turnaround for the Packers defense, which finished in the top 10 in numerous statistical categories, including points per game allowed and yards per play allowed.
More on the Packers’ “incredible growth” under Hafley in 2024 can be read here.
Hafley returned to the NFL after five seasons at the college ranks. He was the co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State in 2019 and the head coach at Boston College from 2020 to 2023. He left to become the Packers defensive coordinator in January of 2024.
Hafley was 22-26 over four seasons at Boston College. He was born in New Jersey, grew up in the state and played college football at Siena in New York.
