The Dallas Cowboys are great at winning games that do not matter and losing the ones that do. The 7-8 team is ranked third in the NFC East, and despite being knocked out of playoff contention, the team is exuberant after its win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The team’s defense showed up on Sunday, and despite the offense and special teams not scoring for the better part of the third quarter and the whole of the fourth quarter, the Cowboys walked away with a two-point victory.
Following the win, owner Jerry Jones was impressed with the team’s effort and more so with Head Coach Mike McCarthy. Jones credited Mike McCarthy for the team’s win.
This confirms one thing, if you’re a fan of the Cowboys, then get ready to live through three more years of Mike McCarthy.
Not to be entirely dismissive of the Cowboys’ win against a solid Baker Mayfield-led Tampa Bay, but this win means nothing to the team at this stage of the season. However, the Cowboys are now embracing the role of being the villain for their opponents as they hope to ruin the playoff odds and overall record of their opponents.
Before Sunday’s loss, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were in the driver’s seat of their playoff aspirations as they sat atop the NFC South. However, after the Atlanta Falcons decimated the Giants, they tied the Bucs’ record and now rank atop the division.
The assumption was that Dallas would attempt to position itself well for the draft, considering that their postseason aspirations have come to an end, but this team is interested in putting their best foot forward and continuing to win the rest of their games.
As for the team’s Head Coach Mike McCarthy, his future with the team appeared grim early on in the season, but fortunately for him, Jerry Jones has a level of faith in the coach that the fans do not share. The team’s owner and GM has vouched for him and hinted at the possibility of bringing him back for another tenure.
Dak Prescott has also been vocal about bringing him back. With two more games left in the season, Dallas will play the top two seeds of its division and arch-rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders.
