Joey Bosa Cut by Chargers, Expresses Interest in Joining San Francisco 49ers
In a shocking move, the Los Angeles Chargers have officially released star pass rusher Joey Bosa, ending his tenure with the team after eight seasons. The decision comes as part of the Chargers’ efforts to clear cap space and reshape their roster heading into the 2025 NFL season.
According to multiple reports, Bosa is now eyeing a potential move to the San Francisco 49ers, where he could reunite with his younger brother, Nick Bosa, forming what would be one of the most dominant defensive duos in the league.
Chargers’ Decision to Cut Joey Bosa
Bosa’s release is largely a financial decision. The Chargers were facing serious salary cap constraints, and moving on from Bosa frees up significant space to address other team needs.
Despite being one of the league’s premier edge rushers, Bosa has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, missing multiple games due to recurring foot and hamstring issues. When healthy, however, he remains an elite pass rusher, as evidenced by his 67 career sacks and four Pro Bowl appearances.
“It’s never easy making decisions like this,” Chargers GM Joe Hortiz said in a statement. “Joey has been an incredible player and leader for this franchise, and we appreciate everything he has done for the Chargers.”
Bosa’s Interest in the 49ers
Following his release, Bosa has reportedly expressed strong interest in joining the San Francisco 49ers, where his younger brother Nick Bosa is already a dominant force on the defensive line.
The 49ers, fresh off another deep playoff run, could greatly benefit from adding a veteran pass rusher, especially if they decide to move on from some of their current defensive line pieces.
Pairing Joey and Nick Bosa together would give San Francisco one of the most dangerous edge-rushing tandems in NFL history. The brothers played together in college at Ohio State, but have never had the opportunity to share the field in the NFL.
“Playing with my brother would be a dream come true,” Bosa reportedly told sources close to the situation. “San Francisco has an incredible defense, and I think I could really help them make another Super Bowl run.”
What’s Next for Bosa?
While the 49ers are seen as the frontrunners, Bosa will likely attract plenty of interest in free agency. Other contending teams in need of a pass rusher—such as the Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, and Philadelphia Eagles—could also make a push to sign him.
However, if the 49ers can make the numbers work, adding Joey Bosa could make their defense even scarier heading into the 2025 season.
For now, the NFL world waits to see where Bosa will land, but a Bosa-Bosa reunion in San Francisco is looking more and more like a real possibility.
