Jonnu Smith pushes for Dolphins throwback uniforms to be permanent..ANHTRUC.

Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith wants the team to make a change, but it has nothing to do with personnel. Rather, he said recently while with Barstool Sports’ Frank the Tank that the Dolphins need to go back to wearing their throwback jerseys all the time.

“I dunno who I need to tell this to upstairs man, but we gotta wear the throwbacks all the time,” said Smith.

Miami’s popular uniforms made two appearances over the span of the team’s 2024 season. The Dolphins rocked those jerseys for the first time of the campaign when the team suffered a loss to a divisional rival in the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 12. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa also went down with a head injury in that contest.

The Dolphins then donned their white throwbacks when they took on the Green Bay Packers back on Nov. 28 in what was another loss for Miami.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross — who is seemingly very well respected by his players — played a part in rebranding the team’s logo and uniforms back in the year 2013.

Smith’s words should now carry a lot of weight in the Dolphins organization after all the success that he enjoyed in his first season in Miami. He was one of the team’s most productive offensive players, as he totaled the second-most receiving yards of any Dolphin a season ago with 884 across 17 games played. Only wide receiver Tyreek Hill ended up with more, and he accumulated 959.

The tight end also led the way for the Dolphins in total receiving touchdowns with eight and averaged 52.0 receiving yards per game.

Before he began his time with the Dolphins, Smith played for the likes of the Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons. He began his NFL career with the Titans after the team drafted him with a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

It doesn’t seem all that likely that the Dolphins will heed Smith’s words in the sense that they will go back to wearing the throwback jerseys permanently, but maybe the organization will consider having the team wear them more than twice next season. Miami’s schedule for the 2025 season has yet to be made public.
