Aaron Rodgers, the legendary quarterback who has long been synonymous with the Green Bay Packers, shared in his Netflix documentary series Enigma how important it was for him to foster a better relationship with Jordan Love than the one he had with his own predecessor, Brett Favre. Rodgers, who had his fair share of difficult moments with Favre during the quarterback transition in Green Bay, seemed determined to do things differently when it came to Love. According to Rodgers, the goal was always to ensure that Love would have the support and guidance he needed to thrive when it was his turn to lead the Packers.
And it seems Rodgers has succeeded in his mission, at least according to Jordan Love himself. In his second season as the Packers’ starting quarterback, Love opened up about the strong bond he has formed with Rodgers over the past few years. The two spent three years together in Green Bay’s quarterback room, and Love says the relationship that developed between them is one built on trust and respect.
“We do, we have a great relationship,” Love shared during an appearance on The Thanalysis Show. “Obviously, I was in the quarterback room with him. And when you’re in that room together, you’re there every day for multiple hours a day. So you build a relationship with everybody that’s in that room. We have a good relationship.”
It’s clear that Love understands the inevitable comparisons that have followed him throughout his early career. Both he and Rodgers entered Green Bay in similar circumstances, as late first-round picks chosen by the Packers while the team was still benefiting from the play of a Hall of Fame quarterback in the twilight of his career. Both quarterbacks spent their first few seasons learning and developing as backups, patiently waiting for their opportunity to lead. And both found individual success early in their careers, ultimately securing significant contract extensions.
Yet, despite these parallels, Love handles the comparisons with a calm and measured demeanor, which is characteristic of his personality. He doesn’t get bogged down by the external noise or media narratives. “The comparisons, that’s always gonna happen,” Love said. “The media is always going to compare everybody in the league, want to compare all the situations. I don’t focus on that stuff. But me and Aaron definitely got a good relationship.”
Indeed, the relationship between Rodgers and Love has been relatively smooth, especially considering the intense moments they shared during their time together. The Packers’ quarterback situation was anything but stable for a while. Rodgers requested a trade in 2021 and even seemed ready to leave Green Bay, but after securing a substantial contract extension in 2022, it appeared that Love would remain the backup for the foreseeable future.
However, everything changed in 2023 when the Packers finally traded Rodgers to the New York Jets, granting Love the opportunity to step into the starting role. That move marked the beginning of a new era in Green Bay, with Love being handed the reins to lead the team. His strong first season as the starter solidified his place as the future of the franchise, culminating in a long-term contract extension that ensured his status as the Packers’ quarterback for the years to come.
While Love’s future in Green Bay looks bright, the circumstances surrounding Rodgers’ future are far more uncertain. After a less-than-ideal season with the Jets, Rodgers is expected to be released, which would open the door for him to either seek another team or retire from the NFL altogether. It’s a stark contrast to the smooth transition Rodgers himself experienced when he took over from Brett Favre, but that’s the nature of the league—constantly evolving, with players coming and going, and careers often taking unexpected turns.
For now, though, the Packers’ focus remains squarely on Jordan Love. The young quarterback has shown that he has the potential to lead the team into a new chapter, and his relationship with Aaron Rodgers, built on mutual respect and mentorship, will undoubtedly continue to shape his growth as a player and leader. As Rodgers looks ahead to an uncertain future, Love is poised to be the face of the Packers for years to come.
