JUST IN: Philadelphia Phillies make 2 Big moves to round out ‘perfect’ 2025 roster…TS.DHUNG.

The Philadelphia Phillies have taken a more cautious approach to the offseason compared to their typically aggressive strategy in recent years. While they remain strong contenders for the National League pennant, their roster still has some notable gaps.

The front office has prioritized continuity, keeping together the core that won 95 games last season. However, as spring training begins, making a couple of key depth additions could better position the team for the long season and a deep playoff run.

Two Moves for the Phillies to Bolster Their 2025 Roster

1. Sign José Iglesias for Infield Depth

One of the Phillies’ underrated weaknesses is their infield depth. With Trea Turner, Bryson Stott, and Alec Bohm entrenched as everyday starters, the team is set at shortstop, second base, and third base. However, a lack of reliable backups could be problematic if injuries occur. That’s where veteran infielder José Iglesias could be a valuable addition.

Known for his elite defense at shortstop, Iglesias has also developed into a solid contact hitter. With the Mets last season, he posted a strong .337/.381/.448 slash line in limited at-bats. While sustaining that level of production over a full season may be unlikely, his career .283 batting average suggests he can still contribute in a bench role.

Philadelphia could benefit from a dependable, glove-first infielder who can step in when needed—especially at shortstop. Turner struggled defensively last season, and while Stott is reliable at second base, the team lacks a strong backup option for either position. The current depth consists of Edmundo Sosa, who has been inconsistent, and utility player Weston Wilson, who has little MLB experience.

Signing Iglesias to a minor-league deal or a low-cost major-league contract would provide the Phillies with valuable infield insurance. He’s a veteran presence who wouldn’t demand everyday playing time but could step in when needed and provide both defensive stability and offensive production.

2. Sign Alex Verdugo for Outfield Depth

The Phillies have improved their outfield situation by signing Max Kepler and bringing back Brandon Marsh, Nick Castellanos, and Johan Rojas. However, additional depth is still necessary, especially given the injury histories of Kepler and Marsh. Adding Alex Verdugo would be a smart move.

Verdugo had a down year with the Yankees in 2024, hitting .233/.300/.347 with 13 home runs. However, at just 29 years old, he has a track record of being a solid hitter. From 2019 to 2022, he batted .289 with a .778 OPS, averaging 15 home runs and 69 RBIs per 162 games.

What makes Verdugo an appealing fit for the Phillies is his versatility in the outfield. While he has played his best defense in right field, he is capable of handling left and center as well. This flexibility would allow the Phillies to adjust their lineup based on injuries and matchups.

Last season, Philadelphia struggled with outfield depth when injuries struck, often relying on underwhelming internal options. Verdugo would provide a proven bat off the bench and could step into a starting role if needed.

Additionally, his left-handed bat would add balance to the lineup, giving the Phillies more flexibility—especially when resting Kyle Schwarber at DH. Given his struggles in New York last year, Verdugo may be looking for a short-term contract to rebuild his value. A one-year deal in the $6-8 million range would be a sensible investment for a team aiming for a deep postseason run.

Final Thoughts

The Phillies are well-positioned for the 2025 season, but there’s always room for improvement. While they appear confident in their core, depth remains a crucial factor over a 162-game season.

Adding José Iglesias would solidify their infield defense and provide a reliable veteran presence off the bench, while Alex Verdugo would bring versatility to the outfield and serve as a valuable insurance policy in case of injuries.

Both moves would be cost-effective yet impactful, helping ensure the Phillies are fully equipped to contend for a World Series title.
