Kyle Larson has answered an important question about future attempts at The Double.TP

Kyle Larson has attempted The Double twice in the last two seasons and failed both times. Based on his comments Sunday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway, he will not try a third time.

“The Double is just a tough undertaking,” Larson said after crashing out of both races. “The window of time is too tight. Even if I didn’t wreck, I don’t think I would have made it here in time and probably would have had to end that race short anyway.

“I just don’t really think it’s worth it, but I would love to run the Indy 500 again. Just doing The Double, I think, is logistically too tough.”

The Double requires a driver to complete both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Last season, Larson completed the Indianapolis 500 but failed to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 due to a massive storm that hit both tracks on the day.

This storm delayed the start of the Indy 500 and made it impossible for Larson to make it to Concord, North Carolina, in time for the start of the Coca-Cola 600.

This season, the weather slightly delayed the start of the Indy 500, but Larson still had a chance to complete the entire race before heading to Concord. However, the situation changed with early crashes involving Scott McLaughlin and Marco Andretti.

Larson was pushing against his hard time limit. He could not miss the start of the Coca-Cola 600 because doing so would lead to him needing a waiver to still compete in the playoffs. Taking this waiver would remove all of his playoff points as part of offseason rule changes by NASCAR.

Ultimately, the time was not a factor. Larson crashed on Lap 92 of the Indy 500 and saw his attempt to complete all 1,100 miles end early. He then headed to Charlotte Motor Speedway, where he was caught up in a multi-car crash started by contact between Ryan Blaney, Daniel Suarez, and Chase Briscoe.

Larson finished 37th in the 40-car field after only completing 245 of the 400 laps.

“Just not the day that I wanted, but huge thanks to Rick and Linda Hendrick, all of Hendrick Motorsports, Arrow McLaren, Chevrolet, everybody involved in making the day memorable,” Larson said.

“It’s just unfortunate, but hopefully we can run it back someday.”

Six drivers have attempted to complete The Double. Tony Stewart completed both events on the lead lap in 2001. He is still the only driver to successfully accomplish this.

Robby Gordon came close. He finished the 2002 Indy 500 on the lead lap, but he ended the Coca-Cola 600 one lap down. This put him 1.5 miles shy of the required 1,100.
