The Boston Red Sox are contemplating shifting a left-handed power hitter to the designated hitter spot, and they are grateful for the legacy of another lefty who filled that role for more than ten years. David Ortiz, a legendary figure in Red Sox history, retired after the 2016 season, yet his influence is still pervasive within the team.

He makes annual visits to the spring training camp in Fort Myers, Florida, and this year, he walked into a more significant controversy than usual. After the Red Sox acquired two-time All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, current star Rafael Devers was left questioning the security of his position.

Despite a $313.5 million extension signed just two years ago, Devers faces the possibility of becoming a designated hitter, contrary to the long-term promise of playing third base.

In a recent episode of the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” podcast, Ortiz shared his discussions with Devers and advised the 28-year-old on approaching the Bregman acquisition. “Eventually, it’s about putting the ego aside,” Ortiz stated. “I’m always in his corner, but I want him to realize that the organization aims to build a strong team around him, so he doesn’t have to carry all the pressure.”

As one of the most cherished and admired figures in Red Sox history, Ortiz commands respect throughout the organization. As a fellow Dominican, Ortiz also deeply understands the challenges Devers faces. “I don’t want him to feel abandoned,” Ortiz expressed. “Or feel let down by the organization’s decision because they would never want to harm — especially someone like Devers.

Sometimes, circumstances arise, and action is necessary. A year ago, he said we need good players. I want to win. And that’s what the organization is striving for.” Ortiz is providing Devers with valuable guidance, and Devers himself has expressed enthusiasm about teaming up with Bregman to compete for a playoff spot.

However, no athlete wants to hear they’re no longer suitable for their defensive position. Now, it’s a matter of seeing if that’s the message the Red Sox will ultimately convey to Devers.
