Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes issued the perfect challenge to fans just before the upcoming AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills.
GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium is known for having one of the best home-field advantages in the NFL because of Chiefs Kingdom’s loud and proud support of their team. Mahomes knows how special it is to play in front of these fans, especially after traveling for the AFC divisional round and AFC title game just last year.
“First off, I think GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium is just a special place,” Mahomes said on Wednesday. “I mean, you get a feeling when you step in the stadium, and you know the history and the greatness that has been played at this football stadium. I think that kind of feeds the football team. Then, the crowd is great at being quiet when we’re on offense (and) being extremely loud whenever our defense is out there, and you feel that passion that the fans have. It’s true, it’s real, and they want us to go out there and be the best that we can possibly be, and so we want to go out there and put up our best fight every single time we’re on that field.”
The crowd noise reached legendary heights even before Mahomes was quarterbacking the team. You might recall the day that Arrowhead was too loud for Denver Broncos QB John Elway.
If that was before your time, you might remember that on September 29, 2014, against Tom Brady’s New England Patriots, Chiefs fans broke the world record for the loudest crowd roar, reaching a deafening 142.2 dB. This advantage is so great for Kansas City that teams regularly pump loud music into practice to prepare for what they’ll face at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
When local radio host Darren Smith asked about his message to Chiefs fans ahead of the game, Mahomes challenged them to make more noise than they had ever made before.
“Yeah, I mean, Chiefs Kingdom is always—they’re always passionate,” Mahomes said on Thursday. “They’re always loud. I would just say let’s even take it up a notch. Let’s see how loud this place can really get. But I always appreciate the support and the love that they show for us, and so I’m just excited for another AFC Championship game back in Arrowhead.”
