Lions’ historic 1,000-yard milestone season: Detroit Lions achieve historic 1,000-yard milestone with Gibbs, Montgomery, St. Brown, and Williams -bb

The Detroit Lions continue to rewrite NFL history, setting milestones during their Monday night clash against the San Francisco 49ers. They became the first team in league history to have two running backs and two wide receivers each surpass 1,000 scrimmage yards in a single season.

Four players surpass 1,000 scrimmage yards

Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, along with wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, have all contributed to this historic achievement. Entering Week 17:

  • Jahmyr Gibbs: 1,596 total yards (1,156 rushing, 440 receiving)
  • David Montgomery: 1,116 total yards (775 rushing, 341 receiving)
  • Amon-Ra St. Brown: 1,132 total yards (1,126 receiving, 6 rushing)
  • Jameson Williams: 953 total yards (890 receiving, 63 rushing)

Williams crossed the 1,000-yard mark thanks to his 41-yard touchdown in the second quarter, making the Lions the first team to achieve this feat. Williams is also closing in on 1,000 receiving yards, which could give Detroit its first pair of 1,000-yard receivers since 2017 (Marvin Jones Jr. and Golden Tate).

A balanced and historic offense

The Lions also joined rare company as the second team in NFL history to have four players record 1,000 scrimmage yards and seven touchdowns in a season. The 2004 Indianapolis Colts accomplished this with Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison, Brandon Stokley, and Edgerrin James.

In another milestone, Detroit became just the fourth team in NFL history to feature three players with 12 or more touchdowns in a season, further cementing their offensive dominance.

Ben Johnson’s innovative play-calling

Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has orchestrated one of the most balanced and explosive offenses in the league. His ability to spread the ball among multiple weapons has made him one of the most sought-after head coaching candidates in the NFL.

Quarterback Jared Goff has been the linchpin of this success, delivering consistent, Pro Bowl-level performances. Goff’s leadership and accuracy have been critical in maximizing the potential of Detroit’s offensive unit.
