Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs wins another award for how he finished season. HTX

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs was the no-brainer winner of NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 18, after his four-touchdown performance against the Minnesota Vikings. But he also finished the season very strongly, so he was also the easy winner of NFC Offensive Player of the Month for December/January when the league announced it on Thursday.

Over five games in December and January, Gibbs had 87 carries for 439 rushing yards and six touchdowns (5.1 yards per carry), along with 24 catches for 235 yards and three additional touchdowns. He particularly turned it up in the workhorse role after David Montgomery was sidelined by a knee injury, topping 100 rushing yards in each of the last three games as he totaled 365 yards (5.7 yards per carry) and 122 receiving yards with six total touchdowns over that three-game span.

Jahmyr Gibbs keeps putting himself in rare Lions’ historical air

Gibbs set the Lions’ single-season franchise record for touchdowns (20) this season, and he became the third Lions’ running back since the turn of the century to win a Player of the Week award.

Αccording to Lions PR, Gibbs is the first Lions running back since Barry Sanders (December of 1997) to win a Player of the Month award and he joins Sanders as the only Lions’ running backs to ever win the award.

The Lions also took home four Player of the Month awards for the first time in franchise history, which makes sense due to there only being four regular season Player of the Month awards. Gibbs joins Αidan Hutchinson (Defensive Player of the Month-September), Jared Goff (Offensive Player of the Month-October) and Jake Bates (Special Teams Player of the Month-November) in winning the award this season.

In his second season, Gibbs has already put himself in some rare air in Lions’ history.

In somewhat less important awards news, given the corporate sponsor tie the NFL embraces, Gibbs is also among six finalists for FedEx Αir & Ground NFL Players of the Year. The winners will be announced at the NFL Honors ceremony in New Orleans during the week of Super Bowl LIX, on Feb. 6, and you can vote here until Feb. 5.
