The Philadelphia Phillies have a roster built to contend for a World Series, but their veteran core won’t be around forever. A major trade could be on the horizon this summer to bolster their championship push. One player who could be on the move is third baseman Alec Bohm. Now 28, Bohm has spent all six of his big-league seasons in Philly and has been a key part of this era. However, with a sluggish start to the 2025 season, his future with the team is uncertain. He’s currently hitting just .200 with a .451 OPS and a 30 OPS+, and his defense at third base has never been a standout feature. That said, his 20 home runs in 2023 and affordable contract could appeal to other contenders.

Though Bohm earned his first All-Star selection in 2024, that performance is beginning to look like an exception rather than the rule. Still, he’s a capable hitter in his prime who could provide solid production elsewhere.

Proposed Trade: The Phillies send Alec Bohm to the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-handed reliever Jeremiah Estrada. Estrada features an explosive fastball and a unique off-speed pitch he calls a “chitter”—a nasty splitter-changeup hybrid with sharp drop. The Padres’ bullpen is both deep and strong, making Estrada expendable, while Bohm could give Manny Machado and Luis Arráez some valuable rest at the corner infield spots.

On Philadelphia’s end, Edmundo Sosa could take over third base. Although a natural shortstop, he’s a strong defender and has been red-hot early in the season, slashing .563 with a 1.401 OPS and a 296 OPS+ through 16 at-bats. With bullpen help a clear need—especially considering Jordan Romano’s recent struggles—targeting an arm like Estrada could pay off big come October.
