Matt LaFleur Calls Out Packers Defense After Vikings Loss…. H

The Packers’ narrow 27-25 defeat at the hands of the Vikings paints a bigger picture than the scoreline might suggest. It’s a canvas head coach Matt LaFleur is not particularly pleased with, especially when it comes to his defense.

Let’s give credit where it’s due: Minnesota’s QB Sam Darnold is carving out one heck of a season. But allowing him to rack up 377 yards and three touchdowns? That’s a recipe for disappointment among Green Bay’s ranks, and LaFleur didn’t hold back his frustration over the lack of defensive pressure.

LaFleur called out his defensive front post-game, emphasizing the necessity of putting pressure on quarterbacks like Darnold. “You’ve got to get pressure on these guys if they’re going to drop back this many times,” LaFleur remarked. “If you don’t, it’s going to be a long day.”

And a long day it was for Jeff Hafley’s defensive ensemble, struggling to hold the line against some pretty straightforward plays. The Packers’ first-half performance raised eyebrows, suggesting they’re not yet in fighting shape for playoff-level competition.

Let’s be clear: This isn’t a question of potential. The Packers boast a roster full of talent and a coaching staff that’s no stranger to success. However, when quarterbacks like Darnold seem to navigate the defense effortlessly, it begs the question of how they’ll face off against league heavyweights like the Lions or Eagles.

In the spotlight of scrutiny is 2023 first-round pick Lukas Van Ness. While his draft status promised star quality, reality has been a different story. Pro Football Focus ranks him at 163 out of 203, a number that underscores a gap between potential and performance. Van Ness has managed just seven sacks in his career, leading some to speculate that he might be struggling to fulfill the high expectations.

Yet, it’s not time to write the final chapter. Van Ness has the tools to transform into a valuable asset for the Packers, and with time, he might still grow into the powerhouse player fans envisioned. For now, though, he’s a role player needing development and a bit more seasoning to reach the heights many hoped he’d climb.
