In a time of growing economic anxiety and housing insecurity, wide receiver Matthew Golden has captured the hearts of millions with an announcement that few saw coming. In a heartfelt and emotional video posted to his official social media accounts, Golden declared that he will invest $20 million of his own money to create a sanctuary — a “haven” — for the homeless in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
“It’s not just about shelter. It’s about dignity, love, and community,” Golden said. “Everyone deserves to feel safe. Everyone deserves a home.”
The project, which Golden is calling The Haven, will include transitional housing units, mental health support, job placement programs, education services, and community kitchens — all designed to help the homeless rebuild their lives in a sustainable, compassionate environment.
His message comes at a time when inflation and rent spikes have left thousands struggling to keep a roof over their heads. While many public figures have spoken out about the crisis, few have stepped up with such a bold personal commitment.
Golden, who has quietly funded charitable efforts in the past, said this project is deeply personal.
“I’ve seen what being forgotten does to a person,” he explained. “If I can change even one life, this will all be worth it.”
Within hours, the internet exploded with admiration. Fans, fellow athletes, and community leaders praised Golden’s action as “historic,” “inspiring,” and “a game-changer.”
Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich issued a statement applauding the move:
“Matthew Golden is showing the kind of leadership that transcends sport. This city is grateful — and ready to help bring this vision to life.”
Construction on The Haven is expected to begin later this year, with the first phase of housing set to open in 2026. Golden says he will remain closely involved at every step.
“I’m not just writing a check and walking away,” he said. “This is a lifelong mission.”
