Jared Goff had a fantastic 2024 season, with over 4,600 passing yards and career-highs in touchdowns (37), completion percentage (72.4) and passer rating (111.8). He garnered MVP votes for the first time in his career, finishing fifth in the voting.
The season also didn’t end well for Goff. His lackluster performance in the regular season finale was overshadowed by how bad the opposing quarterback (Sam Darnold) was, but the playoff loss to the Washington Commanders was ugly with three interceptions.
There is some natural concern about the Lions having a new offensive coordinator, with how well Goff worked with Ben Johnson. But new coordinator John Morton is not foreign to Goff, since he was on the Lions’ coaching staff in 2022, and it’s safe to assume Goff had some input into Morton being hired to replace Johnson.
NFC general manager expects Jared Goff to play at an MVP level again next season
A big story from the week at the NFL Combine was the confrontation at the Starbucks in the JW Marriott between insiders Jordan Schultz and Ian Rapoport rooted in conflicting reports about the Matthew Stafford situation.
John Maakaron of SI.com had a much lower-key coffee run after a long day of interviews, as he used some advise on where to see and connect with notable people in Indianapolis.
“So, after ordering a grande black coffee at Starbucks, an NFC general manager came walking by.
Luckily, I did not spill my drink all over myself as I approached and gave my credentials and asked just for a couple mins to chat.”
Goff was the topic of conversation between Maakaron and the anonymous NFC general manager, who had good things to say about the Lions’ signal caller.
“Jared is a quarterback that has shown he can rebound time and time again from a bad performance,” the GM said. “He is not going to want to have that uneasy feeling sitting with him for too long.”
Asked if Goff could be in the MVP conversation again next season, the general manager offered more praise.
“Yeah, I certainly expect him to again be in the conversation to win MVP in 2025, and to build on what he and Ben Johnson have worked on these past couple of seasons. Jared is certainly up there among the best pocket passers.”
A general manager is never going to say anything negative publicly (even anonymously) about another team’s quarterback. But Goff has garnered some respect around the league for how he’s turned his career around in Detroit, and there’s nothing to stop him from having another excellent season in 2025.
