NFL Free Agency: Should the Lions Target Osa Odighizuwa?

NFL Combine week has been filled with discussions about draft prospects and potential fits for the Detroit Lions. However, free agency is fast approaching, with the tampering period beginning in just 11 days. Naturally, this has led to speculation about possible roster moves for the Lions.

A Bold Proposal from ESPN

ESPN’s Aaron Schatz recently released his best free agency fits for all 32 teams, and his suggestion for the Lions is particularly intriguing. He proposes that the Lions part ways with former second-round pick Levi Onwuzurike and replace him with Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa.

The Case for Odighizuwa

From a security standpoint, this move makes a lot of sense. Onwuzurike has had an inconsistent career, playing just one full season since entering the league. However, his 2024 campaign was impressive, as he recorded 47 pressures and three sacks.

Odighizuwa, on the other hand, has been far more durable and reliable. He has missed only one game in his NFL career, dating back to his rookie season in 2021. Over the past three seasons, he has been a consistent starter for the Cowboys and is coming off a strong 2024 season in which he totaled 60 pressures and seven sacks. His track record suggests that he is a safer bet for long-term success.

Evaluating the Financial Impact

The Lions must determine whether Onwuzurike’s breakout season was a one-time occurrence or a sign of sustained growth. They also have to consider the financial implications of signing Odighizuwa.

Salary cap expert Joshua Queipo projects that Onwuzurike could command a two-year deal worth $28 million in free agency. In contrast, Odighizuwa is expected to receive a four-year contract worth $94 million. While the latter would require a significantly larger financial commitment, his proven track record and durability make him a more secure investment.

Should the Lions Make the Move?

Based on the numbers and overall performance, it’s difficult to disagree with Schatz’s recommendation. Odighizuwa is a high-caliber player who brings consistency and durability to a defensive line that needs stability. Although his price tag is steep, his production justifies the cost.

Could This Deal Become a Reality?

The biggest question is whether the Lions can actually make this deal happen. The Cowboys have expressed interest in retaining Odighizuwa, but they also need to manage several other key contract situations. They must decide how to keep DeMarcus Lawrence and figure out how to make Micah Parsons the highest-paid edge rusher in the league.

If Odighizuwa becomes available, the Lions should seriously consider making a move. His skill set and reliability could provide a major boost to their defensive front, making him a worthwhile investment in free agency.
