Patrick Mahomes has already won the Super Bowl three times with the Kansas City Chiefs. However, the quarterback may feel tempted to chase another feat―one that he cannot achieve in the NFL.

With the International Olympic Committee (IOC) including flag football as an Olympic sport for the 2028 games in Los Angeles, the possibility of seeing NFL players represent the United States has become a big talking point.

On May 20, NFL owners approved a resolution to allow league players to participate in LA28. While it’s a bit soon to tell who will end up representing Team USA, Mahomes is reportedly interested in chasing an Olympic gold medal with his country.

I think that there will be a push, just like talking to Patrick Mahomes about it, for instance. I think there will be players that want the gold medal,” Jeff Darlington of ESPN told Kevin Clark on This Is Football.

“I think it adds something to a resume that maybe the average American doesn’t understand. It’s the same thing in golf, they treasure that gold medal. It’s like a major to them, and it’s something different. And I think that that is a factor that when it comes up, I think that people are going to be surprised the level of interest that there is. Mahomes I think wants to do it. I really do.

What did Patrick Mahomes say about participating in the 2028 Olympics?

Not long ago, Mahomes revealed he’d like to play in the 2028 Olympic Games. Speaking to reporters in August, the Chiefs star made it clear he’d be thrilled to represent the U.S., even as an assistant.

There’s the want to, I just don’t know if my skill set is what is required for flag football,” Mahomes said. “First, I’m going to be in my 30s a that point and then it’s a lot of scrambling at the QB position. It’s not just sitting there throwing.

“And then I’m sure more of the athletic quarterbacks might get out there. I could be a coach. You get a gold medal for being a coach? Maybe I could be a consultant for the team.”

Mahomes knows flag football isn’t easy

Mahomes, however, didn’t want to get in any controversy with the players who already represent the United States in flag football. In fact, he admitted that the transition from the NFL may not be as easy as it looks.

I think just let the best man win. If that’s flag football guys or that’s NFL guys, let them go out there and train for it,” Mahomes said, via The Kansas City Star. “It’s not like flag football is easy.

I mean, those guys are out there working on it, working on their craft every single year… When you play quarterback and some of those bigger positions, those guys are moving around with a lot of speed, and they (have) got to make plays happen.”

The Olympics, a longtime dream of Mahomes

Either way, it’s crystal clear that making an appearance in the Olympics has been a longtime dream for Mahomes. Now that it is a real possibility for football players, it’s safe to say the Chiefs star would be glad to show up in LA28.

“I think it’s really cool because football is a great game that has given me so much and I want to make sure everyone gets the same experience that I got growing up,” Mahomes told Olympics.com.

“I’ll be 31, 32 years old, so if I can still move around then, I’m going to try to get out there and throw the football around maybe in LA. Just don’t tell Coach [Andy] Reid or [Brett] Veach or anybody.”
