Last season ended in heartbreak for the Detroit Lions, who looked like strong contenders to win their first-ever Super Bowl but suffered a shocking defeat against the Washington Commanders in the divisional round of the playoffs. Head coach Dan Campbell wants to learn from past mistakes and is focused on surrounding quarterback Jared Goff with the right pieces. As part of that plan, the team has secured the return of a former Philadelphia Eagles player for the 2025 NFL season.
The Lions have had significant departures from Campbell‘s staff for the upcoming season. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was hired by the Chicago Bears as their head coach, while defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn took over as head coach of the New York Jets. In this context, Detroit will have to reorganize its strategy for the next campaign.
Goff has proven to be the Lions‘ card to go far in the league. The 30-year-old quarterback is entering his fifth straight season in Detroit and knows he needs a loaded offense at all positions, especially if he wants to solidify the running game with old acquaintances.
HC Campbell’s Lions returning player
The player returning to Dan Campbell’s Lions for the 2025 NFL season is none other than offensive lineman Kayode Awosika, who has signed a contract extension. However, the Detroit franchise has not disclosed key details such as the amount or length of the deal.
Jared Goff #16 of the Detroit Lions warms-up prior to a game against the Denver Broncos at Ford Field on December 16, 2023 in Detroit, Michigan.
Awosika began his NFL career with the Eagles after going undrafted in 2021. He first joined the Lions in 2022, signing from Philadelphia’s practice squad. Overall, Goff’s teammate has played in 36 games, including seven starts, during his time in Campbell’s team.
With Awosika’s return, the Lions have re-signed most of their offensive players who had become free agents. Four of their five starting offensive linemen from last season will be available for Campbell in the upcoming campaign.
