NFL news roundup: Jason Peters retires, Bills sign Khalil Shakir to contract extension.THANHDUNG

There were several notable stories that occurred in the National Football League (NFL) on Tuesday. Here is a roundup of all of the major headlines from the day.

We start with news on retirement, as nine-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jason Peters has chosen to hang up his cleats after 19 seasons in the league. Despite going undrafted in the 2004 NFL draft, Peters went on to have a stellar career spanning two decades.

Having started in his career in Buffalo with the Bills, the Queen City, Texas native spent the majority of his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. It was with the Eagles where he won the Super Bowl, defeating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. Following a season with the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys, Peters spent his final two years with the Seattle Seahawks. He will remain in Seattle take up a front office role there.

Along with nine Pro Bowl appearances between 2007 and 2016, Peters was also a two-time First Team All-Pro, and four-time Second Team All-Pro. All of these honours came while he was with the Eagles.

Washington Commanders allowing Jonathan Allen to seek trade

In what is a rather twist, the Washington Commanders are willing to let defensive tackle Jonathan Allen look elsewhere for his future in the NFL. The 30-year-old only played in eight NFL games the 2024 season, missing a chunk of the campaign due to a pectoral muscle injury picked up in week 6.

Allen was picked 17th in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the then-Washington Redskins. He has played all eight seasons in Landover, and was selected for the Pro Bowl twice in 2021 and 2022.

There is no word yet on where Allen would land should he move on from Washington. In fact, according to the Commanders’ general manager Adam Peters, he could still stay. Time will tell whether the former Alabama Crimson Tides man will move on, or remain with the team.

Buffalo Bills’ Khalil Shakir agrees to four-year extension

The Buffalo Bills’ wide receiver Khalil Shakir has agreed to a four-year extension with the defending AFC East champs. This was announced by the team on Tuesday, as they opted to extend his contract. It is expected that the contract is set at $60.2 million, with $32 million guaranteed.

Having just completed his third year in the league – all with Buffalo – the 25-year-old featured in 18 matches last season. He had 94 catches for 995 yards and four touchdowns. The Bills selected Shakir in the fifth round of the 2022 draft, and 148th overall.

It was another successful for the Bills, who finished second in the AFC with a 13-4 record. That allowed them to win the AFC East crown for the fifth year running. They reached the AFC Championship, where they fell 32-29 to the Kansas City Chiefs.

San Francisco 49ers promote Mick Lombardi to quarterbacks coach

The San Francisco have decided to promote Mick Lombardi to quarterbacks coach after serving as the senior offensive assistant. The 36-year-old completed his first season back with the 49ers in 2024 after spending seven years away. During his first stint from 2013-16, he had various smaller roles for the team.

Lombardi will replace Brian Greese in the position, though it is currently unclear why the latter left. During his time away from San Fran, the Ocean City, New Jersey native had spent time with the New York Jets (2017-18), New England Patriots (2019-21), and Las Vegas Raiders (2022-23) before retruning to the 49ers.

It was a disappointing year for team, who finished bottom of the NFC West with a 6-11 record. This is despite having made the Super Bowl in 2023.
