The Brandon Aiyuk Trade Saga: Will the 49ers Move Their Star Receiver?
49ers Face Tough Decisions Amid Brock Purdy Extension Talks
As the San Francisco 49ers focus on securing Brock Purdy with a long-term extension, another pressing issue looms over the franchise—the future of star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. While trade rumors have circulated for months, new reports suggest the team is not only open to dealing Aiyuk but has engaged in discussions with multiple teams. However, his contract situation and recent injury complicate matters, making a potential trade far from straightforward.
Aiyuk’s Frustrating 2023 Season and Injury Setback
Aiyuk entered the 2023 season with high expectations after securing the contract extension he desired. However, his season took an unfortunate turn in Week 7 when he suffered a torn ACL, forcing him to miss the remainder of the campaign. The injury not only sidelined one of the 49ers’ most dynamic offensive weapons but also cast uncertainty over his future with the team.
Now, with the 49ers exploring options, reports from Fox Sports confirm that the team has been in communication with several organizations regarding a potential trade. However, Aiyuk’s contract structure poses a significant obstacle.
The Financial Hurdles of an Aiyuk Trade
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the 49ers’ willingness to trade Aiyuk comes with a major caveat—his financial commitment. The star receiver is set to receive a guaranteed option bonus of nearly $23 million on April 1, making any trade before that date far more feasible than afterward.
“Things are a bit more tenuous, however, between the Niners and their WR1,” Schultz reported. “Sources indicate that the 49ers are open to trading Aiyuk—a terrific player who will certainly be motivated—and there has been communication with several teams. However, trading for Aiyuk’s contract coming off an ACL injury is a tall order, and most believe it is unlikely.”
This presents a difficult dilemma for San Francisco. If they keep Aiyuk past April 1, they commit significant cap space to a player still recovering from injury. If they trade him now, they risk losing a key offensive weapon without securing a clear replacement.
Why an Aiyuk Trade Remains Unlikely
Despite the ongoing trade discussions, many around the league believe a deal remains improbable. Former 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel was already traded to the Washington Commanders, and losing Aiyuk would leave San Francisco dangerously thin at the position.
An anonymous personnel director expressed skepticism about the likelihood of a trade. “It would be a pretty big surprise for me,” the director told Fox Sports.
David Lombardi of SF Standard echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that an Aiyuk trade is highly unlikely given his recent injuries and contract guarantees.
“If the 49ers do trade him,” Lombardi noted, “which again, I’m going to emphasize this right now—it’s very unlikely because of the ACL and the MCL. That is a lot of savings for San Francisco over the course of the next several seasons. About $50 million of guaranteed money, or effectively guaranteed money for Brandon Aiyuk, would be shipped off to another team. But that’s why it’s going to be hard to move off of that money. There’s a lot of it, and Brandon Aiyuk is not yet fully healthy.”
The 49ers’ Focus on Improvement
After a disappointing 6-11 season, just a year removed from a Super Bowl appearance, the 49ers are looking to retool their roster and return to contention. While moving Aiyuk could provide financial flexibility, it could also weaken an offense that needs all the weapons it can get to support Purdy.
Ultimately, unless a team is willing to absorb Aiyuk’s hefty contract and gamble on his full recovery, he is likely to remain a 49er for at least another season. The clock is ticking toward April 1, and whether San Francisco makes a bold move or stays the course will significantly impact their trajectory for 2024 and beyond.
