NFL rumors: Why Aaron Rodgers’ future is in the Vikings’ hands.D

Aaron Rodgers: The Last Big Move of His Career?

A Future Hall of Famer in Demand At 41 years old, Aaron Rodgers finds himself in an intriguing position—one of the most sought-after free agents in the NFL. Despite his age, three teams have shown strong interest in acquiring the veteran quarterback: the Pittsburgh Steelers, the New York Giants, and the Minnesota Vikings. Ironically, the team Rodgers is most interested in playing for is the least desperate to acquire him.

NFL rumors: Why Aaron Rodgers' future is in the Vikings' hands

Rodgers’ Desire to Return to the NFC North According to The Athletic’s Michael Silver, Dianna Russini, and Alec Lewis, Rodgers prefers to don the purple, white, and gold and return to the NFC North as the Vikings’ starting quarterback. The possibility of leading a team that won 14 games last season in a division he knows intimately is an attractive one. More importantly, he could serve as a bridge quarterback until J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota’s promising young talent, is ready to take the reins.

However, the financial aspect remains a major obstacle. Minnesota may not be willing to commit the $40 million in guaranteed money that Rodgers is expected to command. If the Vikings ultimately pass on Rodgers, it could set off a dramatic chain of events, including the possibility of his retirement.

Retirement on the Horizon? Rodgers has reportedly put the Steelers and Giants on hold while he waits to see if Minnesota is a viable destination. If the Vikings decide against signing him, The Athletic reports that Rodgers may reject both Pittsburgh and New York and instead choose to walk away from the game entirely.

If that scenario unfolds, it would place the power squarely in the hands of Minnesota’s front office. Steelers and Giants fans would undoubtedly be furious if Rodgers opted for retirement rather than suiting up for one of their teams. The franchises themselves would also be left scrambling for an alternative quarterback solution, further complicating their offseason plans.

What’s Next for the Steelers and Giants? The Giants, who hold the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, could attempt to trade up to the No. 1 spot in an effort to secure a franchise quarterback. Packaging multiple draft picks to strike a deal with the Tennessee Titans remains a possibility. The Steelers, on the other hand, pick at No. 21 and would have a far tougher road to acquiring a top quarterback prospect. If Rodgers declines their offers, they might have to turn to a contingency plan involving a veteran free agent like Jameis Winston.

NFL Fans Await Rodgers’ Decision Despite a disappointing stint with the New York Jets, Rodgers still showcased flashes of brilliance. He posted 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and just 11 interceptions in 17 games during the 2024-25 season. For teams like Pittsburgh and New York, his experience and leadership could provide a stabilizing force at the quarterback position.

Why Minnesota should sign Aaron Rodgers, and why it shouldn't

However, Minnesota presents an opportunity for Rodgers to conclude his career on a high note. With reigning Coach of the Year Kevin O’Connell, an elite receiving duo in Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, and a strong defense, the Vikings might offer the best chance for Rodgers to make a final championship push.

But there are risks. J.J. McCarthy, drafted as the franchise’s future quarterback, missed his entire rookie season due to a torn meniscus and remains unproven at the professional level. The uncertainty surrounding McCarthy’s development could tempt Minnesota to take a chance on the aging but still capable Rodgers.

Everyone, including Rodgers himself, is waiting for an answer to the question: Will he make one final run, or will he step away from the game for good?
