The Green Bay Packers and cornerback Jaire Alexander appear more likely than not to part ways this winter.

For the first five years of his career, Alexander was a two-time Pro Bowler, playing as well as anyone at the entire position. But he’s been limited to 14 games played over the last two seasons, causing mayhem in the news cycle at times to boot.

With an out in his contract this offseason, Alexander has been a trade candidate for the Packers for months, assuming they can find someone to either take on or restructure his deal.

On Monday, Wendell Fereira of A to Z Sports proposed a radical trade idea: Could the Packers swap Alexander for a former Packer, Davante Adams, who also would likely benefit from a change of scenery?

“The funniest possible outcome, though, is the Packers trading Jaire to the Jets for Davante Adams,” Fereira wrote. “But that would demand both players, Adams in particular, agreeing to revised contracts.”

Adams has an out in his contract for an $8 million dead cap hit in 2025, and if his team opts into the deal, he’ll be owed nearly $77 million over the next two years instead. Cutting him isn’t a desirable outcome either, since he’s still a productive receiver, but at his price tag, he’s tough to work into a payroll.

Plus, there’s no guarantee the Jets will want Alexander, even if their top corner, D.J. Reed, predictably leaves in free agency. Green Bay could be forced to make someone else (or a decent draft pick) the centerpiece of an Adams deal.

Needless to say, there are a lot of moving parts behind Fereira’s Adams-for-Alexander notion. But haven’t crazier things happened before?
