Jaire Alexander’s Future with the Packers Looks Increasingly Uncertain
A Difficult Decision Looms
It’s becoming harder to envision Jaire Alexander suiting up for the Green Bay Packers in 2025. Despite being one of the most talented cornerbacks in the league, his hefty $17.5 million salary and concerning injury history have complicated trade discussions. The Packers are actively seeking a way to move him, but so far, no deal has materialized.
With no immediate deadline to force action, general manager Brian Gutekunst remains patient. However, as the offseason progresses, the Packers must decide whether to trade Alexander, release him, or find another solution.
The Trade Market Remains Uncertain
According to ESPN’s Packers insider Rob Demovsky, the team is still working behind the scenes to find a trade partner.
“While Alexander remains on the roster, the Packers are still trying to trade him, according to team sources and a source close to the player. They could wait indefinitely but most likely would prefer to get something done before next month’s draft,” Demovsky reported.
One major hurdle is Alexander’s unwillingness to take a pay cut. The Packers have not approached him about restructuring his deal, and even if they did, sources indicate he would reject any reduction. This makes a potential trade even more challenging, as other teams may hesitate to take on his current contract.
Financial Implications for Green Bay
Alexander’s contract situation is a significant factor in Green Bay’s decision-making. He is under contract for two more seasons, earning $17.5 million in 2025 and $19.5 million in 2026. The Packers’ cap situation for 2026 already looks tight, and their recent signing of cornerback Nate Hobbs in free agency suggests they are preparing for life without Alexander.
If the Packers trade or release him before June 1st, they will take an $18.1 million dead money hit but free up $6.8 million in cap space this year. More importantly, they would clear $27.3 million in 2026 and an additional $2.3 million in 2027.
The team is in no rush, as Alexander does not have any roster bonuses or guaranteed money kicking in until Week 1. This means Green Bay can afford to wait and see if a trade market develops, but holding on too long could limit their options.
Could Alexander Land with a Rival?
If released, Alexander would become a free agent and could sign with any team—including NFC North rivals like the Minnesota Vikings or Detroit Lions. Given his talent, he would likely command a new deal with incentives based on playing time, allowing a team to hedge its bet on his availability.
While releasing him outright isn’t ideal, keeping him at his current salary doesn’t make much sense for the Packers either. The longer this situation drags on, the more questions it raises about Green Bay’s plan.
The Waiting Game Continues
For now, Alexander remains a Packer. But the writing is on the wall. Whether through a trade or an eventual release, his time in Green Bay appears to be coming to an end. The only question left is how and when the team will make its move.
