Packers Set for Historic NFL Matchup in 2025, Breaking New Ground.D

Since the NFL launched its International Series in 2007, the league has taken its games beyond the borders of the United States, with 48 regular-season contests held in various international locations. The majority of these games have been played in London, where 39 matches have taken place, while five have been hosted in Mexico City, three in Germany, and one in Brazil. Additionally, although not officially part of the series, the Buffalo Bills hosted six games in Canada as part of the now-defunct Toronto Series.

The Green Bay Packers, despite being one of the most iconic teams in NFL history, have only appeared in two of these 54 international games. Their first international outing came in 2022 when they were the host team in London at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Unfortunately for the Packers, the New York Giants handed them a tough 27-22 defeat. Fast forward to the start of the 2024 season, and the Packers found themselves once again taking part in a historic international game, this time as the visitors. In Week 1, they traveled to São Paulo, Brazil, for the first-ever NFL game held in the country, where they faced the Philadelphia Eagles at Arena Corinthians. The Packers fell short once again, losing 34-29 in a hard-fought contest.

With the NFL’s ongoing efforts to expand its global reach, there are already plans in place to bring the International Series to new cities. In 2025, the league will host a game in Madrid, Spain, and there’s also talk of bringing a regular-season matchup to Dublin, Ireland, in what would be a groundbreaking event for the NFL in that country. According to recent reports, the Green Bay Packers are likely to be one of the teams involved in this exciting first-ever regular-season game in Dublin.

The matchup in Dublin would be particularly significant for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have not traveled outside the U.S. for an international game since their 34-27 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at London’s Wembley Stadium in 2013. As reported by Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers are expected to be part of the 2025 International Series, with the game likely to be played at Croke Park in Dublin. The Steelers have strong ties to Ireland, with the late Dan Rooney, the team’s longtime owner and chairman, having served as the U.S. Ambassador to Ireland from 2009 to 2012. This historical connection further solidifies Pittsburgh’s role as a natural host for such an event.

Green Bay Packers Reportedly In Line To Play Historic Game In 2024

As for the opponent in this landmark game, reports from Steelers insider Noah Strackbein of Sports Illustrated suggest that the Packers will be the team to face off against Pittsburgh in Dublin. While the Steelers would serve as the home team, Green Bay would once again be the visitor, continuing their trend of being involved in memorable international matchups. This would mark the first-ever regular-season NFL game in Ireland, though it wouldn’t be the first game to be played there. Back in 1997, the Steelers and the Chicago Bears faced off in a preseason game at Croke Park, a historic moment for the sport in Ireland.

For the Packers, this game presents an opportunity to solidify their place in the NFL’s international history. While the team has had limited international exposure so far, the 2025 matchup in Dublin could be the beginning of a new chapter in Green Bay’s global journey. Whether they’re playing as the home or visiting team, the Packers’ involvement in the game would further enhance their storied legacy on the international stage, giving fans around the world a chance to see one of the league’s most successful franchises compete in an exciting new venue.

Packers eager to show the Lions how much they've improved since their last matchup

As the NFL continues to expand its reach, the prospect of more international games becomes increasingly exciting for both teams and fans alike. The Packers’ potential involvement in Dublin represents a unique opportunity for the franchise, and with the NFL’s vision for future global events, we can expect more electrifying international showdowns in the years to come. For Green Bay, it’s not just about playing the game; it’s about embracing a global fanbase and continuing to build on the legacy of a team that has captured the hearts of fans far beyond the United States.
