Davon Godchaux is on the move, folks. After eight seasons in the AFC East, the former Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots defensive tackle is saying goodbye to the division.

The New Orleans Saints have struck a deal to bring Godchaux back to his roots in Louisiana in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick. Expect the trade to be official when the league year kicks off this Wednesday at 4 p.m.

ET.

Word on the street was that the Patriots were looking to offload Godchaux. It seems he wasn’t the perfect puzzle piece for the new defensive scheme under incoming head coach Mike Vrabel. However, by trading Godchaux to the Saints, not only do the Patriots clear up some systemic congestion, but Godchaux gets to make his homecoming to the Bayou.

In other moves involving former Dolphins players, tight end Mike Gesicki has inked a contract extension with the Cincinnati Bengals. Another chapter begins for this former Miami talent, as he prepares to add to the Bengals’ offensive arsenal.

Let’s rewind to Godchaux’s Miami journey. Drafted in a forgettable 2017 class for the Dolphins, Godchaux was a fifth-round gem among a muddled mix of picks.

During his four years in Miami, he manned the trenches for 42 out of 52 games. His run with the Dolphins was marred by a significant injury in 2020, but that only paved the way for his next chapter with New England.

With the Patriots, Godchaux’s durability shone through as he played all 68 games over four seasons, starting in nearly every one. It’s worth noting that the rest of Miami’s 2017 draft class had a much shorter shelf life. First-rounder Charles Harris and others like Raekwon McMillan and Cordrea Tankersley didn’t secure second contracts, making Godchaux’s tenure all the more notable as the only player to see a fourth season with the Dolphins.

As the trade talk subsides and we look forward to new playbooks and locker room dynamics, it’s clear Godchaux’s journey is one to watch. Keep an eye on how he fits into the Saints’ defense, and whether this change of scenery in familiar territory sparks something special.
