The Philadelphia Phillies started May with a loss but bounced back with two straight wins over the Arizona Diamondbacks in a hard-fought home series. Still, the chance to complete a sweep slipped away once again due to issues in the bullpen.

UD Shares The Most Important Lesson He Learned From Pat Riley

Fans on social media—especially on X—were quick to unleash frustration over the Phillies’ pitching staff. Comments ranged from sarcastic to brutal. “The Phillies bullpen just hooked up with your best friend and stole your identity. They are exactly who you thought they were,” wrote Kyle Pagan on X.

While the bullpen allowed only four runs in the series finale against the Diamondbacks, some fans pointed out that the problems ran deeper than just pitching. “Every Phillies loss is the same recipe: bad bullpen, bad defense, and bad base running. Every single time,” another fan posted.

Lingering concerns around the Phillies’ bullpen

It’s worth noting that prior to the final game, the Phillies’ bullpen had actually been solid—allowing just one earned run over a span of 20 innings. That brief optimism was erased Sunday as the unit faltered once more.

“The problem with the Phillies playing in extras is that the bullpen can’t pitch with runners on and simultaneously the lineup can’t hit with runners on,” posted @blondederin on X. But not everyone pointed the finger squarely at the relievers. Bob Altieri replied, “Today’s issue is Ranger gave up 7 runs in 4 innings. Very difficult to come back and win from that. Especially with a depleted bullpen…”

What’s next for the Phillies

The Phillies now hit the road for back-to-back MLB series—first against the Rays from May 6–8, then against the Cleveland Guardians from May 9–11. They’ll return to Citizens Bank Park on May 12 to face the St. Louis Cardinals.
