Red Sox $300 million star sets record straight heading into spring training | Sporting News.THANHDUNG

The Boston Red Sox are setting themselves up as a contender heading into the 2025 Major League Baseball season.

The Red Sox have had a rough three seasons. After making it to the American League Championship Series in 2021, they had two straight 78-84 seasons, finishing last in the division. Last season, they finished third in the division with an 81-81 record.

Boston has taken great measures to improve this offseason, trading for Garrett Crochet during the Winter Meetings and most recently signing star third baseman Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal. Though signing Bregman is great for the Red Sox, third baseman Rafael Devers was adamant about staying at third base.

In his first opportunity to speak to clarify his stance after those comments, Devers set the record straight, according to Mass Live’s Chris Cotillo.

“I feel like I said everything I needed to say that day,” Devers said through translator Daveson Perez. “I still feel the same way. I have no reason to be frustrated about anything. I don’t listen to what’s said. I don’t pay attention to what is said. I just know what I’m capable of.”

“I really don’t know why this is becoming such a big story. We’re a team and we communicate with each other. Like I’ve always said since Day 1, the most important thing for me is that we win. That’s where I stand.”

The Red Sox signed Devers to a 10-year, $313 million contract in 2023, and he has played well. In 2024, Devers slashed .272/.354/.516 with 28 home runs and 83 RBIs. It’s unclear what decision Boston will make defensively, but it’s clear that third base is where Devers wants to remain.
