The Red Sox knew they eventually would have to make some tough roster decisions, the first round of which came Wednesday.
Boston announced its latest round of spring training cuts, optioning right-handed pitchers Luis Guerrero and Josh Winckowski, and infielder Vaughn Grissom to minor league camp. The Red Sox also reassigned catchers Nathan Hickey and Mark Kolozsvary to minor league camp.

Grissom, 24, is perhaps the most notable cut, having lost out in his competition for the second base job to the likes of Kristian Campbell, David Hamilton and Marcelo Mayer — all of which still have an opportunity to earn the everyday job.
Winckowski and Guerrero were easier to see coming, as both had notable struggles in their fight for a bullpen spot. Boston seemingly decided on the backup catcher, as well. Hickey and Kolozsvary being reassigned places Carlos Narvaez in firm control of the job behind Connor Wong.
Grissom, Winckowski and Guerrero will all start the season with Triple-A Worcester.
