GREEN BAY, Wis. – This offseason, the Green Bay Packers have released three cornerbacks, with Jaire Alexander possibly being the fourth. To fill these gaps, they signed Nate Hobbs, a talented player with a history of injuries, during free agency. In a fresh seven-round mock draft by Pro Football Network, Ben Rolfe targeted this “pressing need” by selecting Shavon Revel from East Carolina.
Revel, who intercepted two passes in the initial three games last year before a torn ACL cut his season short, offers significant potential and much-needed size to the defensive backfield. “Shavon Revel Jr. combines height, reach, and speed, which could herald a bright future at cornerback,” Rolfe noted. “He possesses a high football IQ, excels in mirroring receivers, and has notable ball-tracking ability, though he is recovering from a major injury and comes from a small program.
Nevertheless, prior to his injury, he was seen as a possible top-10 pick.” Revel is expected to be fit for training camp’s start. “He has the ideal reach and excellent zone vision, and with more experience, he should enhance his zone coverage,” outlined NFLcom’s Lance Zierlein in his evaluation. A strong pass defense relies on both pressure and coverage.
With Revel boosting coverage capabilities, Ole Miss’ Princely Umanmielen could rejuvenate the Packers’ inconsistent pass-rushing effort. Although Rashan Gary was selected for his inaugural Pro Bowl last season, he has yet to achieve a 10-sack season. Lukas Van Ness, another former first-rounder, did not make significant progress in his second year. “Though the Packers boast some reliable pass rush choices, they are missing a transformative pass-rushing duo,” Rolfe remarked.
“Picking one in the second round doesn’t guarantee an elite option, but Princely Umanmielen comes with an impressive track record and the agility to adapt well to the NFL.” Umanmielen recorded seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss at Florida in 2023, followed by 10.5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss at Ole Miss in 2024. “He stood out at the Senior Bowl—long, flexible, athletic, and able to cover ground efficiently,” commented NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah prior to the Scouting Combine.
With defense addressed, what about the receiver position? The Packers picked Utah State standout Jalen Royals in the third round.
“Possessing the speed to challenge defenses and a knack for winning contested catches,” Rolfe wrote, “Royals is also a post-catch threat, making him a third-round project pick that could be a valuable offensive development piece in the coming years.” Royals hauled in 70 catches for 1,084 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2023.
He seemed destined for a spectacular 2024, but an injury restricted him to seven games, where he managed 55 receptions for 839 yards. Impressively, he averaged 7.9 yards after the catch per reception and secured seven deep passes. A standout performance at the Senior Bowl confirmed his status as a top-100 prospect. “He actually resembles Randall Cobb, taking a step back into the past,” Jeremiah noted.
On Day 3, the Packers selected a defensive tackle, an offensive tackle, a running back, another cornerback, and a center. The chosen cornerback was Caleb Ransaw from Tulane, a prospect with exceptional athletic ability; standing at 5-foot-11 3/8, he clocked a 4.33-second 40-yard dash and achieved a 40-inch vertical leap, contributing to a 9.96 Relative Athletic Score.
