With Josh Allen and Saquon Barkley emerging as the top close contenders for the NFL MVP award this season, the debate over who deserves it more has intensified. Stephen A. Smith has already declared the Buffalo Bills quarterback as the MVP, while Richard Sherman has sided with the Philadelphia Eagles running back.

Barkley, who has shattered multiple records in his debut season with Philly, currently leads with +325 odds to win the prestigious MVP honor and becoming the first non-quarterback to do so since 2013. Preceding him is the Bills star Allen, who is the favorite to win the MVP honor with -250 odds.

However, former NFL star Sherman doesn’t believe the quarterback is having as extraordinary a season as the leading pass rusher Barkley. In the recent episode of The Richard Sherman Podcast, Sherman dived into the MVP debate, claiming he doesn’t understand the hype around Pro Bowler in the MVP conversation.

Looking at his stats, Sherman isn’t entirely wrong as Allen is having his second-worst season in the league individually with an average of 224.3 passing yards per game. However, he has excelled in explosive plays and ranked the Bills’ offense second in the league with 29.6 points scored as average.

Although Allen is the only player with negative odds of winning the prominent MVP honor, there still remain four to five weeks in the season. If he continues with the same consistency as he has been for most of the 2024 season, he might flip the coin in his favor.

In the last 12 games, he has logged 1,499 rushing yards and averaged 124.9 yards per game. If he continues at this pace, he might be able to break the historic record of Eric Dickerson for the NFL’s all-time single-season rushing yards with 2,105 set in 1984.

If he succeeds in that, his claim to the 2024-25 NFL MVP honor will solidify over the Bills signal-caller. Besides his individual success, Barkley has made the Eagles’ offense deadly with his addition as he continues on an eight-game winning streak with a 10-2 season record.
