Over the upcoming 48 hours, a whirlwind of speculation is expected, with many rumors likely never materializing. Nonetheless, this won’t prevent us from experiencing the emotional ups and downs typical of every offseason. While legal tampering officially begins tomorrow, the buzz has already started for the Miami Dolphins.
The initial rumor hints at a potentially monumental signing, featuring a well-known name. According to The Athletic’s NFL Insider, Dianna Russini, the Miami Dolphins are significantly interested in free agent outside linebacker Joey Bosa. Bosa, aged 29, was recently released by the Los Angeles Chargers, saving them $25.3 million in cap space.
Following his release, many speculated he would join his brother Nick Bosa with the San Francisco 49ers. However, if the latest report holds true, the Dolphins, along with General Manager Chris Grier, are prepared to engage. Throughout his nine seasons in the NFL, Joey Bosa has achieved double-digit sacks on four occasions.
He ranks second in Chargers history with 72 career sacks. Despite this, recent seasons have seen Bosa struggle with injuries, only participating in 28 games over the past three years. Yet, teams are eager to acquire a pass-rusher of Bosa’s caliber. Although EDGE isn’t Miami’s primary concern, Head Coach McDaniel has pledged to enhance this position each year.
Bringing Bosa into a lineup already featuring Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, and Chop Robinson would certainly intimidate rival quarterbacks. Defensive Coordinator Anthony Weaver has discussed the potential of Phillips, Chubb, and Chop, and adding Bosa could be transformative. However, the cost for Bosa might exceed what Miami is willing to pay.
If they feel the need for another dominant EDGE player, they might consider the draft instead. Additionally, Bosa might not fit the team culture the Dolphins are pursuing. Considering his recent injury troubles, it’s hard to fully endorse the move, though I can understand the appeal.
