Will the Vikings Make a Bold Move for the No. 1 Free Agent Guard?
The Vikings’ Urgent Need for an Interior Upgrade
The Minnesota Vikings have a glaring issue on the interior of their offensive line. Neither Ed Ingram nor Dalton Risner has solidified the right guard position, and concerns extend to left guard Blake Brandel and center Garrett Bradbury as well. If the Vikings want to take their offense to the next level, addressing this weakness is crucial.
Trey Smith: The Best Guard on the Market
Among all the guards set to hit free agency, one name stands above the rest—Trey Smith. The former sixth-round pick has been a pillar of consistency for the Kansas City Chiefs, starting 79 of 80 games across the regular season and playoffs. Over his rookie contract, Smith has logged more than 5,200 snaps, showcasing elite durability and performance.
A Proven Performer in Big Moments
Smith isn’t just reliable—he’s battle-tested on the biggest stage. As the Chiefs prepare for their third straight Super Bowl appearance, Smith remains a key piece of their offensive line. His PFF grades consistently range between 72 and 76, reflecting his well-rounded abilities as both a pass protector and run blocker. Few linemen in the league offer that kind of steady excellence.
Could Minnesota Land Smith?
According to Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling, the Vikings are expected to be aggressive in pursuing top-tier guards, and Smith is likely high on their list. Speaking to KFAN’s Paul Allen, Goessling hinted that Minnesota will be in the mix if Smith hits the open market.
“I think they’ll be pretty aggressive for players like that,” Goessling said. “He’s probably at the top of the guard market, which will be expensive. But I think they are going to make a big priority of going after a guard. And I think they would have a lot of interest in getting a guy like him in here.”
The Price Tag: Worth the Investment?
Smith won’t come cheap. Spotrac projects his next contract at around four years, nearly $20 million per season—making him one of the five highest-paid guards in the league. But if the Vikings decide to let Sam Darnold walk and commit to J.J. McCarthy on a rookie contract, they’ll have the financial flexibility to make a major move.
Keep an Eye on No. 65
As you watch Sunday’s Super Bowl, keep your eyes on No. 65 in the Chiefs’ red and white. If Minnesota is serious about fixing its offensive line, there’s a real chance that Smith could be donning purple and gold next season.
