The Miami Dolphins might witness more quarterback changes within the division with Aaron Rodgers departing from the New York Jets than initially anticipated. Marissa Myers of TWSN suggested that the Dolphins could trade quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

Concerns have lingered regarding Tagovailoa’s history of concussions, while McCarthy, a recent first-round selection, could make a significant impact in his second year after missing the 2024 season due to MCL surgery. “McCarthy will be a compelling trade prospect because of his readiness for the professional level,” Myers noted. “In his college career, McCarthy amassed 6,231 yards and 48 touchdowns from 481 completions, with only 11 interceptions.

He excels at reading defenses, anticipating throws, maneuvering within the pocket, extending plays, and making accurate throws on the run.” Myers also highlighted McCarthy’s exceptional leadership abilities, stating that he would be an ideal fit for the Miami Dolphins. During his college tenure, McCarthy played for a Michigan team that remained unbeaten and captured the national championship in 2023, under the guidance of former Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh, who later transitioned to coaching the Los Angeles Chargers.

McCarthy could offer the Dolphins a new beginning at the quarterback position, surrounded by a talented duo of receivers in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Myers believes the Dolphins must weigh factors beyond just Tagovailoa’s health in their decision-making process. “Tua Tagovailoa has been beneficial for Miami, yet it’s evident that changes are necessary as the team has reached its peak with him,” Myers observed.

“While Tagovailoa has excelled against weaker teams, he struggles to deliver consistent performances in crucial games against top-tier opponents.” “Tagovailoa has faced difficulties when expected to execute significant downfield plays, leading to reckless throws. Out of his seven interceptions this season, six occurred on passes traveling 10 or more yards,” Myers commented.

“With McCarthy, the team would gain a more consistent quarterback, eliminating concerns about erratic play. Additionally, McCarthy possesses greater mobility compared to Tagovailoa, allowing him to make plays outside the pocket and throw accurately on the move,” she added. “If the Dolphins aim to elevate their offensive game, McCarthy is the solution. The Vikings, on the other hand, could acquire draft picks in return.”
