Lions Could Roar into Contention with Tyreek Hill Acquisition
Detroit Reportedly Has the Assets to Make a Splash for “Cheetah”
The Detroit Lions, fresh off a promising season, are rumored to be exploring a potential blockbuster trade for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. The dynamic playmaker, known for his electrifying speed and game-changing ability, could add another dimension to Detroit’s already potent offense.
Hill’s Potential Fit in Detroit
Lions quarterback Jared Goff could achieve something that no other QB in the NFL has accomplished. To have his best season, Hill will have to set his sights on breaking the 2,000-yard barrier for a receiver, something never done before, as the NFL record belongs to legendary former Detroit Lions player Calvin Johnson with 1,964 yards1.
The move would also come with some financial implications, as the Dolphins’ options for getting Hill off their books in the 2025 offseason are limited4.
What Would Detroit Need to Give Up?
The Lions would need to offer a package that entices the Dolphins to part ways with their star receiver. The Dolphins may consider moving on from wide receiver Tyreek Hill6. Miami must also establish a culture of accountability that prevents a repeat of this season, when multiple players were repeatedly late to team meetings and fined to no avail5.
After the game, Hill didn’t mince words and suggested that his days in Miami are numbered4. A trade is the most interesting potential outcome with a $15.85 million option bonus that must be exercised by the end of August 20254.
Other Teams in the Mix
While the Lions are reportedly interested, they are not the only team that could make a play for Hill. Tyreek Hill did tease speculation he could move on after a frustrating 2024 campaign with the Dolphins but quickly reiterating he’s open to staying7. The Los Angeles Chargers need to add a bonafide No. 1 or another No. 2 wide receiver for quarterback Justin Herbert in 20253.
Whether Detroit will ultimately pull the trigger on a trade for Tyreek Hill remains to be seen. However, the rumors suggest that the Lions are serious about upgrading their roster and making a Super Bowl run in 2025.
