We have our first major trade of the offseason (but it doesn’t become official until the new league year starts on March 12th). After much speculation and heated rumors, the San Francisco 49ers are trading away one of their star wide receivers in Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round pick. Ian Rapoport was the first one to report the trade news.
The Commanders now have their trio of Jayden Daniels, Terry McLaurin, and Deebo Samuel. After shocking the NFL last season by making it all the way to the NFC championship game, the Commanders are going all-in while they have Daniels on a rookie contract. It’s a very smart move that orgnaizations make when they identify that they have their franchise quarterback.
Now, Bills fans might be asking “What does this trade have to do with Buffalo?” and the answer is quite simple. Any Bills fans that are hoping Buffalo can somehow find a way to re-sign wideout Amari Cooper should be glad that the Commanders were the ones that traded for Samuel.
Bills fans no longer have to worry about Commanders pursuing Amari Cooper
I didn’t have the Commanders as one of the teams that could potentially steal Cooper away in free agency, but it would have made a lot of sense for him to head to Washington. With the Commanders doing a fast rebuild with their young star quarterback, they may be able to attract pending free agents who are looking to win and also get paid as they have Daniels on his rookie contract for the next couple of years.
Now, there might be Bills fans that are okay with Buffalo moving on from Cooper. Let’s face it, he didn’t have a huge impact in his time with the Bills but he was a fantastic locker room teammate.
With Washington making the move for Samuel, it pretty much eliminates the chance of them going after Cooper. That means that Cooper may have just lost out on a team that he could have joined if he doesn’t come back to Buffalo.
While there are plenty of other teams that could pursue Cooper, atleast there is one team that more than likely Buffalo does not have to worry about, assuming that they are looking to bring Cooper back in Bills blue.
