TRADE UPDATE: Chiefs at risk of losing $31 million star to Chargers in free agency.

The Kansas City Chiefs are 11-1 looking to three-peat as Super Bowl champions. Looking ahead to free agency, they could lose one of their core defensive players that helped them win back-to-back championships.

The Chiefs signed safety Justin Reid to a three-year, $31 million deal in 2022. He was a key player in the Chiefs’ last two Super Bowls. However, he will be a free agent after this season ends.

Chiefs predicted to lose beloved $31 million starter to Chargers in free agency | Sporting News

While predicting moves for every team to address their needs, Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine predicted that Reid would sign with the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency.

“Justin Reid isn’t playing at an elite level, but he’s a steady veteran who the Chargers could use,” wrote Ballentine. “Minter’s defense has been at its best with three safeties on the field, so Derwin James can be free to make plays. Reid would allow them to do that.”

Reid has started all 12 games for the Chiefs this season. He has just one interception, but is second on the team in tackles and third in passes defended. He has been a key part of the team once again this season. Losing him would immediately make safety one of the Chiefs’ biggest needs in the offseason. Losing him to a division rival like the Chargers would sting even more.

Since joining the Chiefs he has started 45 games and recorded 246 tackles. He has been a staple of the Chiefs’ recent success. The Chiefs will likely want to bring him back, but other teams will be bidding to land the veteran safety.
