Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith’s contract situation is one of the most important storylines for the Kansas City Chiefs after the first couple of weeks in free agency.

He’s currently on the franchise tag at a guaranteed $23.4 million, though he’s been clear about his desire to stay in Kansas City. Originally a sixth-round pick in 2021, this is the largest salary he’ll have ever received, though now Smith is after long-term security.

After trading Joe Thuney, the Chiefs will either have to extend Smith and break the market or find two new starters in consecutive years. In new comments from Smith, he put pressure on the organization to get a deal done.

Appearing on the “Up & Adams Show” with Kay Adams, Smith expressed love for Kansas City and said he was focused on staying long-term.

“I can only focus on just working out and training,” Smith said. “I love Kansas City, it’s my home. I love the Chiefs. The fans in Kansas City are some of the best people I’ve ever been around. Ultimately, I would love to stay there. That’s my plan.”

Those comments are music to fans’ ears, though the longer this drags out, the more expensive he’ll likely become. Smith is only 25 years old and one of the best guards in the entire NFL, so it’d make sense for the front office to get a deal done before someone else resets the market.

General manager Brett Veach likely has a plan, and negotiations are probably ongoing. Considering all the issues the team had on the offensive line last year, though, it’s hard to imagine how the Chiefs could let Smith walk.

Hopefully, a contract will get done sooner than later. Otherwise, Kansas City will have to break the bank even more in 2026.
