UPDATE: Detroit Lions waive LB David Long, re-sign WR/RET Maurice Alexander to practice squad.THANHDUNG

As we work our way through Week 17, the Detroit Lions continue to make roster moves in order to gain roster fluidity. On Tuesday, they announced that they’ve released linebacker David Long and re-signed wide receiver/returner Maurice Alexander to the practice squad. Following both these transactions, the Lions now have two open spots on their active (53-man) roster and two spots open on the practice squad.

How Maurice Alexander went from the USFL to the Detroit Lions

Long was signed by the Lions just over a month ago and was active on game day in Weeks 12-16. Over those five games, Long played 70 defensive snaps and 58 special teams snaps, while registering seven tackles, and recording a fumble recovery against the Packers.

Long spent most of his time with the Lions in a three-man rotation at WILL linebacker while starter Alex Anzalone recovers from a broken forearm and reserve Jalen Reeves-Maybin recovers from a neck injury. But with Reeves-Maybin nearing a return from injured reserve—he started his 21-day evaluation clock last week—and Anzalone not too far behind, the Lions appear comfortable with the linebacker depth they have on the roster.

Because the Lions are not 100% certain of when Reeves-Maybin or Anzalone’s return from injured reserve, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Long re-signed to the practice squad for insurance. Similar to what we just saw done with Chris Smith on Monday or with Alexander on Tuesday.

After spending training camp with the Lions, Alexander was released at cutdowns but has been on and off the roster for most of the season. While the Lions like Alexander, he simply does not contribute enough on offense (zero snaps over five games active) and was passed by Tom Kennedy as the team’s primary punt returner last week. At the same time, he’s solid insurance and warrants a spot on the practice squad.
