The Green Bay Packers are contemplating parting ways with cornerback Jaire Alexander. The former All-Pro has battled several injuries over the last four years, and this, coupled with his contract, is a major factor in the team’s potential decision to move him—though it also raises questions about whether they’ll receive adequate compensation.
“We’ve invested heavily in Jaire and want to ensure that if he’s not contributing to our victories, we receive something in return,” stated general manager Brian Gutekunst at the NFL League Meetings. “We’ll see what unfolds, but we’re in regular discussions with (agent John Thornton) to determine the best path for both Jaire and the Packers.”
Despite concerns about Jaire’s financial burden ($17.5 million in 2025) and availability, some teams may consider acquiring him based on their salary cap, team development, and his potential to excel at a premium position.
Las Vegas Raiders Currently, the Raiders’ starting corners are Darnay Holmes, Jakorian Bennett, and Decamerion Richardson. A fit Jaire Alexander would significantly enhance their lineup. Head coach Pete Carroll and GM John Spytek have shown a propensity for aggressive moves, so pursuing this deal wouldn’t be surprising.
The Raiders possess $48.8 million in cap space, making the trade financially feasible. Furthermore, the Packers and Raiders frequently exchange defensive backs. This offseason, for instance, Nate Hobbs joined Green Bay, while Eric Stokes headed to Las Vegas.
New England Patriots Similarly, the Patriots have $67.6 million in cap space, making finances a non-issue. More importantly, finding top-tier talent in free agency is challenging, and trading for such players is a resourceful strategy if the draft price is low.
New England already boasts a solid cornerback lineup with Carlton Davis and Christian Gonzalez outside, but Jaire would add versatility and could slot inside. Patriots Executive VP of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf has ties to Green Bay, having departed the Packers the offseason they drafted Alexander, adding a layer of scouting familiarity.
Dallas Cowboys The Cowboys have a strong cornerback duo with Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland, though Diggs is returning from a series of knee injuries. Additionally, their slot corner, Israel Mukuamu, could see competition from Jaire in Dallas. Jerry Jones might be hesitant to shell out large contracts, but he favors bold, star-studded moves. Jaire Alexander fits this mold, and there’s no extensive financial commitment. The Cowboys hold $37.6 million in cap space.
Pittsburgh Steelers The Steelers recently secured a long-term asset in Joey Porter Jr. and added seasoned Darius Slay. Jaire would enhance their flexibility and elevate their potential. The Steelers seem poised for significant moves this offseason, having acquired wide receiver DK Metcalf. Jaire has a solid rapport with quarterback Aaron Rodgers from their time together in Green Bay. Pittsburgh has $32.1 million available in cap space.
Baltimore Ravens While the Ravens have a tighter budget with only $11.4 million in cap space, projected to be $8.4 million post-draft picks, they often pursue undervalued talent. Trading a low draft pick for a former All-Pro aligns with their strategy. Restructuring Alexander’s contract could make this financially viable. Though the Ravens boast depth in their secondary, this would allow Alexander not to shoulder the full load.
