UPDATE: Lions’ Penei Sewell getting first-team All-Pro selection leaves Eagles salty.THANHDUNG

The Associated Press released its list of All-Pros for the 2024 season and Detroit Lions right tackle Penei Sewell earned first-team honors, while Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson earned the second-team nod.

But, as is the case with any accolade in professional sports, there is a debate about if the voters got it wrong, with some believing Johnson was more deserving of the first-team selection than Sewell, who also finished ahead of Johnson last year, also.

In that crowd are the Eagles themselves, apparently. On Friday, Eagles beat writers posted a photo of Johnson’s locker that had a stat comparison between the Eagles offensive lineman and Sewell taped to it.

It isn’t clear exactly who put it there, but one would assume it was one of Johnson’s teammates or coaches. Whatever the case may be, the comparison makes a strong argument for Johnson to have gotten the honor over Sewell.

Johnson has the edge in many major categories, including sacks, hits and pressures allowed — all of which come from Pro Football Focus — and pass-block win rate. Johnson had to block for longer on average and had a higher island rate.

The comparison also includes a few run-blocking stats but leaves out Pro Football Focus run-blocking grades, which Sewell (90.5) has a 10.5-point advantage in (80.0). Johnson (88.1) has a 14-point advantage in pass-blocking grade over Sewell (74.1)

Stat Johnson Sewell
Sacks allowed 0 1
QB hits allowed 1 5
QB hurries allowed 9 22
Pressures allowed 10 28
Pass block win rate 94% 91%
Island rate 75% 55%
QB time to throw 3.13 seconds 2.79 seconds
Run block win rate 80% Not ranked
Team rushing yards 3,048 2,488

It should be noted, however, that the Eagles threw the ball 103 less times than the Lions did, and Philly had 87 more rushing attempts than Detroit.

This is the second year in a row that Johnson has fallen short of a first-team All-Pro nod to Sewell despite having many superior numbers, so we can’t necessarily blame the Eagles for being in their feelings about it.

Whether they earn first- or second-team honors, the fact of the matter is that both players are elite at their position. Johnson is a future Hall of Famer and Sewell is very much on that track himself.

A total of six Lions players received All-Pro honors. Along with Sewell, safety Kerby Joseph, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and punter Jack Fox were all first-team. Center Frank Ragnow and wide receiver Kalif Raymond (returner) finished with second-team honors.
